Students will gain a global perspective on the experience of disability within a South American culture. In addition to knowledge and skills training, students will be able to try a “hands-on” approach in working with Peruvian adults and children with various disabilities.
The University of Kansas summer study abroad program in Peru offers students the opportunity to gain an international perspective on the social, educational, and non-governmental services available to Peruvian adults and children with various disabilities and their families in the coastal and mountain regions of Perú. The program is hosted by the Centro Ann Sullivan del Perú (CASP), an internationally recognized leader in providing high quality educatio
nal programs for persons with different abilities. Participants will visit public and private centers and schools serving children with special needs in both Lima and Cusco. Participants will also visit organizations and groups that serve adults with disabilities. In addition, participants will visit universities in Lima to hear presentations by renowned disability leaders and scholars on various aspects of independent living and disability in Peru.
Students will also have the opportunity to visit many of Peru’s rich historical and archaeological sites. This program includes visits to sites of interest in Lima and Cusco such as the Archaeology Museum, Museum of Gold, San Isidro, Barranco, and the Indian Market as well as field trip to Machu Picchu—the lost city of the Inca.
The Ann Sullivan Center of Peru was founded by Dr. Liliana Mayo in 1979. Beginning with just eight students, CASP now serves more than 450 students and their families. CASP is a non-profit organization serving individuals with different abilities (mental retardation, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, etc.) and their families through a variety of center-based and community-based programs. It is also an internationally recognized research center and training facility for issues in mobility.
