Sport and Culture in Germany

Through this unique program, students majoring in all areas of Health, Sport and Exercise Science can gain an international perspective through the exploration of such issues as international sport marketing, facility and event management, and the socio-cultural issues of sport. Classroom lectures will be augmented by presentations from faculty of German institutions, as well as by field trips to local sports venues, organizations and associations, and clinics.

Tentative Itinerary

Day 1
Overnight flight to Germany

Day 2
Group arrives in Germany, transfer by private bus from the airport to the hotel in Stuttgart, check in to hotel. Guided walking tour of Stuttgart in the afternoon to get a first impression of Germany followed by a welcome dinner at a restaurant in Stuttgart.

Day 3
Breakfast at the hotel, KU program director and University of Stuttgart faculty lectures about the History and development of the various professions in Germany and in the USA in the morning followed by a free afternoon.

Day 4
Breakfast at the hotel, visit to the House of Sports “SpOrt Stuttgart” or a joint sports activity together with students of the University of Stuttgart.

Day 5
Breakfast at the hotel, audio-guided tour of the Mercedes Benz Museum or the newly opened Porsche Museum in the morning, and afternoon free.

Day 6
Travel to Munich, check into hotel followed by guided bus tour of Munich in the afternoon to get a first overview of the Bavarian capital and a Bavarian dinner at a restaurant in Munich.

Day 7
Visit a health center to learn about medical fitness training and/or rehabilitation. Meet a representative of the Bavarian Committee of Sports and get a presentation on “The organization of sport clubs in Germany.”
Day 8
Guided tour of the Olympic stadium and entrance of the Olympic tower in the morning and in the afternoon, a guided tour of the German Museum (Deutsches Museum), the world’s largest museum of technology and science, with approximately 1.3 million visitors per year and about 28,000 exhibited objects from 50 fields of science and technology.
Day 9
Meeting with professionals of a German soccer club (1. FC Bayern München AG, TSV München von 1860), a swim- or skiclub in the morning. Guided tour of the new Allianz Arena in the afternoon.

Day 10
Travel to Oberstdorf. Visit to the Erdinger Jump in Oberstdorf, location of the annual ski jumping world championships in the morning. Meeting with a representative of the Ski Club Oberstdorf in the afternoon.

Day 11
Free time and farewell dinner at the Hofbräuhaus in Munich.

Day 12
Depart Munich Airport for USA.

Dr. Carr is the Director for the Athletic Training Education Program. His research interests include education outcomes and program evaluation.

Course Description

HSES 598/798: Health, Sport, and Exercise Science in International Culture (3 credits)
This is an experiential study abroad course designed to allow students to explore their particular fields of interest within a foreign culture.

Accommodations

Students will stay in double occupancy rooms in a youth hostel or 2-star hotel. Breakfast is included. Map of Germany

Dates

Depart US: July 6, 2010
Arrive Stuttgart: July 7, 2010
Depart Munich for US: July 17, 2010

Eligibility

Open to undergraduate students from any accredited U.S. college or university. Minimum 2.5 GPA required (exceptions considered after submission of a petition).

Credit

Three hours of credit are granted by the University of Kansas upon successful completion of the program.

Cost

Program fee: $3,070 ($3,270 for non-KU students) The fee includes accommodations, entrance fees, excursions, breakfasts, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation services, orientation, and administrative costs.

Tuition and Fees: Estimated tuition and fees for 3 credit hours (based on standard tuition rate): $715. *

*Actual expenses for KU students will vary by the student’s individual tuition compact. Non-KU students will pay the standard tuition rate listed above.

Estimated Additional Expenses: Airfare, most meals, books, personal expenses, passport fees, and extracurricular excursions.

All dates, costs, and program information are subject to change as necessary due to fluctuations in the exchange rate or other reasons.

Financial Aid

KU students who qualify for summer financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Pell or SEOG Grants, and scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a Study Abroad Program.

Limited supplemental scholarships are available to KU undergraduates. Applications are available at the Office of Study Abroad. You can also download the scholarship application. The scholarship application deadline is March 1.
