Advanced French Studies in Strasbourg, France
The Strasbourg Summer Language Institute is open to students having completed at least four semesters of college-level French or its equivalent and who wish to earn six credit hours of French at the major level. This five-week program begins with a five day visit to Paris and will continue in the month of July with intensive study and site visits in and around Strasbourg.
During their stay in Paris, students will have the opportunity to visit many of the major monuments and museums, such as the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and others. Accommodations will be provided for 5 nights in a Paris hotel.
During the month of July students attend language courses and seminars taught by native French instructors and the KU program director, Corinne Anderson, at the Institut International d’Etudes Françaises (IIEF), a division of the Université des Sciences Humaines de Strasbourg (USHS), located in the heart of the city. Daily classes are held mornings and afternoons in one of the University’s majestic XIXth-century buildings. Students spend the morning in language instruction with native instructors and two hours in lecture and discussion with the KU faculty instructor and program assistant each week. Students will also choose one or two afternoon seminars from the following areas: Europe & the EU, French regional history (Strasbourg and Alsace), Art History, Francophone literature, French Media or Contemporary French Civilization.
Participants in the special seminar on Europe will attend introductory lectures on the European Union, France’s relation to its European partners, and the place of Strasbourg within the new EU structure. Seminar participants also spend two half days at the Palais de l’Europe, site of the European Parliament and the Conseil de l’Europe.
Students will have the opportunity to take part in several excursions to local
and regional sites in and around Strasbourg, such as local museum visits, the "Route
du Vin" tour, art treasures of Colmar, and hiking tours in the Vosges.
