Next offering . . . Summer 2009!
Spend three and a half weeks in the town where Shakespeare was born, studying the craft of acting with members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, perhaps the most famous classical acting company in the world, followed by four days in London.
While in England, students will attend productions in Stratford, London, and Oxford; take acting, voice, fencing, and other classes; attend lectures, seminars, and workshops, and visit points of interest throughout England. Classes will take place in the Shakespeare Centre, overlooking the Shakespeare birthplace.

While in Stratford, program participants will visit the five Shakespeare houses and Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare is buried.
The program also includes a four day excursion to London to visit the Globe Theatre and other London sites, visiting Hampton Court on the way. Two London theatre performances are included. Students will also travel to Oxford to attend a play, with a stop at the magnificent Blenheim Palace.
The program was created in 2005 by Paul Meier, Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film. Meier has spent many years cultivating a special relationship between KU and the Royal Shakespeare Company, with two sabbatical leaves with the company. His background as an English actor and voice teacher, training and teaching at the same schools attended by the company members, opens some doors not normally open to visitors from abroad. He is the author of Voicing Shakespeare.
In 2009 the program will be led by John Staniunas, Chair of the Department of Theatre and Film and Acting Artistic Director for the University Theatre. Staniunas brings a wealth of knowledge to the program with extensive performance, directing and choreographic experience in both dance and fight choreography to the work of William Shakespeare. Of note is his performance of Edgar in King Lear directed by American Players Theatre Producing Artistic Director David Frank and starring Royal Shakespeare Actor Geoffrey Beevers as Lear.
