Turkish Women in Islam and Society

Turkish Women in Islam and Society

This course offers students the opportunity to explore the ways in which women have been and are active in Islam and society in Turkey. It begins with three evening sessions at the University of Kansas which will provide an introduction to Islam, an introduction to the Turkish language, an overview of Ottoman and modern Turkish history, and a survey of Turkish women’s participation in Islam and society.

Participants will then travel to Turkey where the group will visit Istanbul, Konya, and Ankara. Students will tour Islamic sites and meet with women who are active in the public sphere in areas as diverse as education, research, development, politics, religion, art, music and the media.

The program concludes with a follow-up discussion session at KU. Students will be expected to attend and participate in class discussions and activities in all of the preparatory and follow-up sessions and to write a three-page paper on a Turkish woman of their choice.
