Students with an interest in the education profession will have the opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese language and culture at Huazhong Normal University in Wuhan, China.  The program is especially suited to students who intend to become K-12 teachers of Chinese as a foreign language or of world history, social studies, or other field that includes teaching about China. Huazhong Normal University has signed an agreement for cooperation with the University of Kansas and is the Chinese partner university of the Confucius Institute at the University of Kansas.

Huazhong Normal University is a comprehensive university with one of the top teacher preparation programs in China. The university was established in 1903, with a  a lovely campus spread out over the top of “Mt. Osmanthus” where over 10,000 Osmanthus trees bloom each spring. The university has more than 20,000 students.and is known for top academic programs in education, physics and history. The university has national level research centers in Chinese Linguistics and Language Pedagogy and Modern Chinese History. Huazhong Normal University is an official testing site for the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) exam and has a well-established program for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. In 2007, the university hosted over 800 long-term international students and over nearly 1,000 short-term international students, from 54 countries. The Chinese language program for international students overs a broad range of classes, from beginning level to advanced HSK preparation.

The program is based in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province and the fourth largest city in China with a population of 9.7 million. The city is a key political, economic, educational and cultural  center on the Yangtse River in Central China. The metropolitan area of Wuhan is composed of three districts, formerly separate cities divided by the Yangtse River and the Han River, a Yangtse River tributary.

Wuchang, home to over twenty universities and colleges including Huazhong Normal University, is known for its intellectual centers and scenic beauty, particularly the East Lake, one of the largest lakes in urban China. The historic Yellow Crane Tower, on the Wuchang bank of the Yangtse River, on a clear day offers expansive views of the river that have inspired many poets.  Wuchang is also the site of the provincial government.

Known for its stylish shopping centers, Hankou is one of the oldest commercial centers of China and today is still the financial heart of central China. In the 19th century, several nations established consulates near the banks of the Yangtse River in Hankou, and the imposing European buildings, reminiscent of the bund in Shanghai, today overlook a beautifully landscaped promenade along the river. Hanyang, the third “city within the city,” includes one of the most important Buddhist temples in China, as well as a major industrial center that includes manufacturing facilities for Budweiser, Coca Cola, and Peugeot. The central location of Wuhan on the largest river in China has led to its development as the major transportation hub of central China, with rail, water, and highway links to cities throughout China.
