Language
and Culture in Salvador Bahia, BrazilThe University of Kansas Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Office of Study Abroad offer students the opportunity to spend the summer in Salvador Bahia, Brazil studying Portuguese language and culture.
In addition to intensive beginning, intermediate or advanced-level Portuguese language study, the program offers guided excursions to locations of interest in Bahia, guest speakers, and weekly cultural activities. Cultural immersion is furthered through accommodations with local families and weekend excursions to Morro de São Paulo and Lençóis.
Study the language and culture of the fifth largest country in the world – Brazil – in one of its most beautiful cities, Salvador Bahia. This 500 year-old city is a cultural, historic, and architectural jewel with the largest complex of colonial buildings in the Americas. Atop spectacular beachside cliffs and rich in Afro-Brazilian culture, Salvador Bahia earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 1985.
As the first capital of Brazil, from 1549 to 1763, Salvador de Bahia witnessed the blending of European, African and Amerindian cultures. Today, this heritage is easily visible in the music and arts, culinary traditions and religious life of the city. This is particularly visible in June, when Salvador comes alive with music, dance, festive food, and street decorations for the Festas Juninas.
Faculty members on this program are drawn from the University of Kansas, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Brazilian-American Cultural Association of Bahia (ACBEU).
ACBEU is a well-established bilingual language school in Salvador where international students study Portuguese language and Brazilian culture and local students study English. ACBEU’s highly qualified teachers, small teacher-to-student ratio, and modern, well-equipped classrooms, library, and campus provide ample opportunities to immerse oneself in Portuguese language study. In addition, ACBEU’s centrally located Vitoria campus provides quick access to many historical and cultural sites in the city, including the Pelourinho, Cidade Baixa, Barra, and others.
