Undergraduate Architecture
Spannocchia, Italy and Barcelona, Spain

The goal of the Undergraduate Architecture Program is to make students aware of the contributions of culture to the profession of architecture. The charm of historic cities and sites exposes participants to contrasting cultures exhibiting a vital urbanity and an exciting contemporary architecture that connects with historic precedent.

Students will spend one month in Spannocchia, Italy and one month in Barcelona, Spain studying the art and architecture of the two countries and participating in hands-on projects. In Spannocchia, the group will live and work at the Castello di Spannocchia, headquarters of the Etruscan Foundation. In Spain, participants will work on the design of a building to house the offices of the Mies van der Rohe Foundation.

Spannocchia, Italy

Spannocchia is situated high in the hills eight miles southwest of Siena, a charming medieval city with a pedestrian city center and a wide array of museums, churches, and historic sites. It is located in the Tuscany region of north-central Italy, which has one of the richest cultural histories of any area in the world. The ancient Etruscans flourished in the region until the rise of Rome and passed many of the developments of their culture along to the succeeding Roman civilization. Between the 14th and 16th centuries the era of humanism and the Renaissance was born in Tuscany.

Castello di Spannocchia is a 1,100 acre family estate of the late Count Ferdinand Cinelli and field headquarters of the Etruscan Foundation.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is one of the most prosperous and dynamic cities in Europe today. Students are encouraged to explore the cultural riches of this modern western European city after class: world-class opera, concerts, museums, theatre and outstanding architecture. Areas such as the Barri Gòtic and L’Eixample are filled with examples of history and architecture ranging from ancient to modern times.

The program of study in Spannocchia is divided into two segments: first, the study of historic places and second, the ways in which these forms and patterns prevail to influence architecture of the present. Emphasis will be on the evolution of building form through time and the contribution of rural forms to urban types.

Study includes both lectures and seminars on the history of the area, its culture, and its formal and informal architecture. Students will have the opportunity for day trips to study, research, and experience the art and historic forms of Etruscan, Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and modern Italian contributions to Western culture. Each week includes three days of hands-on work in vernacular construction techniques, three days of touring, plus a day of studio critiques of drawings, watercolor work and some free time left for students’ individual projects.

In Barcelona, the program will focus on a design project addressing the urban context of Barcelona. The project will begin with a series of mapping exercises ranging from video, photography, watercolors, collages, and drawings to formulate preliminary concepts and design ideas. The proposal for the addition will proceed through a series of study models to be documented photographically. Each student will be responsible for a final model upon his or her return that will be due in September 2005, and a final presentation of the design process.

As part of the study abroad program, students will document and analyze two public spaces in each country, based on documentation of direct experiences of these two European cultures.
