Parents

Welcome to Study Abroad!

We are pleased that your son or daughter has chosen to participate in the KU study abroad program! Based upon the experiences of literally thousands of students, we know that study in a foreign country can be exhilarating, challenging, and one of the most lasting aspects of a student’s education.

At the same time, our staff is aware that the political environment in some countries is difficult to assess. We want you to know that the safety and security of students are of paramount importance to everyone in the Office of Study Abroad. We monitor developments in the U.S. and around the world carefully, and make adjustments in our programs as conditions warrant. You can access important health and safety information on all foreign countries from the U.S. State Department at www.travel.state.gov and from the Centers for Disease Control at www.cdc.gov.

Advisors in the Office of Study Abroad work with students for several months prior to their departure. We supply each program participant with a student handbook and other information relevant to the study abroad experience (click here to download a PDF version of the handbook). We also give students a lengthy list of questions to help them prepare themselves for study abroad. We encourage students to share this information with their parents, and urge you to take time to read through the materials.

If you do not have a passport, I would ask you to consider getting one in case of an emergency. In the past, we have had times when a student has gotten sick or injured and the presence of a parent was desirable. While these incidents are few, it’s a good idea to be able to join your child, if needed. And, the OSA staff is ready to assist your family both in the U.S. and in a foreign country should the need arise.

Thank you for your interest and the support for your student. If you have concerns you would like to discuss, I urge you to contact this office. We anticipate that the study abroad experience will be enjoyable and educational. We’re ready to help your student make the most of the KU study abroad experience.
