Design in Mexico

The purpose of the program, Design Study in Mexico Winter Break 2008 program is an exploration of art and design from the Aztecs to Modernism in the heart of Mexico. Participants will learn about cultural aspects of contemporary Mexican arts and crafts, and to understand the influence of centuries-old traditional arts and crafts production on contemporary work. Visits will be conducted to contemporary art galleries, art and crafts museums, and anthropological museums. Emphasis will be placed on the study of murals by the Mexican artists O’Gorman, Pacheco, Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros. Of particular interest will be visits to several Aztec sites in and near Mexico City, including Teotihuacán.

Mexico City

Mexico City, an expansive city of over 20 million, is the world’s third-largest metropolis. Built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the ancient Aztec capital, reminders of past civilization pervade the city, particularly at the Templo Mayor excavation site and the Anthropological Museum at Chapultepec Park. Today Mexico City is the capital, seat of government and the center of commerce, finance and the arts. Possible visits in Mexico City include the National Anthropology Museum, the Zócalo and surrounding points of interest, Tenochtitlán Templo Mayor, Palacio de Bellas Artes, National Autonomous University of Mexico, the Modern Art Museum, Teotihuacán, and Chapultepec Castle.

Puebla

Puebla - Barrio del ArtistesPuebla de los Angeles is situated on a high plateau in the center of Mexico, just 70 miles (122 km) from Mexico City. Founded over 460 years ago, Puebla uniquely blends modernity with history and is believed to be the Mexican city which most faithfully preserves the colonial Spanish heritage. For its beautiful colonial architecture UNESCO has designated the city as a cultural heritage site. In Puebla, participants may visit the Cathedral, Iglesia Santo Domingo (Capilla de Rosario), Mercado la Victoria, Barrio del Artista, Museo Ampara and a Talavera workshop and showroom.

San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende is a picturesque colonial city located four hours north of Mexico City in the mountainous region in central Mexico. It is a city rich in culture, history and heritage, San Miguel de Allende is known as the home of heroes of the Mexican independence and as a national center for the arts. The city of 90,000 is a thriving artists’ community and has forty art galleries with different artistic styles. Many world renowned artists maintain studios here. Participants will experience the old world colonial charm of San Miguel de Allende through a walking tour of the city and discovering its art galleries and studios. Participants will also visit the colonial gem, Guanajuato, a UNESCO World Heritage site with it winding cobblestone streets, gorgeous colonial buildings and the birthplace of the revered Diego Rivera.
