Design in Italy

Art and Design in Italy

The purpose of the program, Art and Design in Italy 2007, is to provide students with an immersion into various art and architecture periods including the Romanesque, Byzantine, Renaissance and Baroque. Contemporary art and design media and concepts will also be emphasized on this trip with visits to important contemporary collections of art and sculpture as well as to design studios and workshops.

Rome, Italy (5 days)

The program begins in Rome, where participants will visit such sites as St. Peters Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, the Roman ruins and the Coliseum. Participants will trace the works of Michelangelo, Bernini, Borromini, Caravaggio and Raphael through visits to several important churches and museums. The group will also have time to visit various piazzas that contain significant fountains and where each has an exciting street life where food, entertainment, relaxing and people-watching are part of every day events.

Florence, Italy (7 days)

The history of many art and architecture styles may be studied within the historic center and compact area of Florence. Within this area are located important treasures of art, sculpture and architecture—the doors of Ghiberti located on the Romanesque Baptistery, the multicolored marble façade and dome designed by Brunelleschi of the Duomo, and the campanile designed by Giotto, as well as the work of artists whose work began the period most associated with Florence, the Renaissance. Students will again follow the work of Michelangelo as well as that of Giotto, Donatello and Botticelli at some of the most important museums in the world, the Uffizi, Pitti Palace and the Bargello.

From Florence, students will take a day trip to the famed city of Siena, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. In Siena, participants will take an extended walking tour of the city visiting the Piazza del Campo, a wonderful example of city planning, the beautiful Duomo and Baptistery, as well as many of the neighborhoods to discover their individual marks and visual applications.

Venice, Italy (4 days)

Students will arrive in Venice at the beginning of the Venice Biennale, one of the most prestigious contemporary art venues in the world. Since its foundation in 1895, the Biennale has been in the avant-garde, promoting new artistic trends and organizing international events in the contemporary arts, including art, architecture, cinema, dance, music, and theater. Several days will be devoted to visiting exhibitions and events around the city.

In addition, participants will visit the Piazza and Basilica of San Marco and two other important sites of contemporary art, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Pinault collection at the Palazzo Grassi. From Venice, the group will also visit the islands of Murano, site of world-reknown glass-blowing studios, and Burano, a traditional fishing village island and site of many brightly and different colored houses.
