The
University of Newcastle offers students the perfect combination of lifestyle
and learning. Set in superb bushland and close to spectacular beaches, waterways
and forests, the University is renowned internationally and among the top ten
research universities in Australia. Newcastle is well known for its academic
excellence and innovative teaching. The University’s setting and relaxed
atmosphere combine to offer an excellent environment for academic pursuits and
personal development. The university was established in 1965 and has 22,000
students. The Callaghan is set on 300 acres of natural bushland complete with
Australian wildlife. The university facilities are modern facilities that house
the library, student clubs, shops, cafes, sports facilities, lecture theaters
and laboratories.
KU course equivalencies for the University of Newcastle
Newcastle is on the east coast of New South Wales and a 2.5 hour train ride from Sydney. Newcastle is a down-to-earth Australian city that combines a country setting with the advantages of city living. The city is known for beautiful beaches, a low cost of living and a favorable climate. Being Australia’s second oldest city, Newcastle is a city rich with cultural heritage. It has a population of 350,000 and all the usual city attractions, including restaurants, cafes, parks, gardens, theaters, art galleries, shopping centers and nightclubs. Newcastle enjoys a pleasant climate year round similar to the central California coast. Numerous attractions are within easy access from Newcastle and include everything from rainforests and wilderness areas to extensive vineyards.
The University has four on-campus residence halls. Residences have options for both meal plans and self-catering. Placement in on-campus accommodations can be competitive. Fall semester: Early July to late November (mid-semester break in late September)
Spring semester: Mid-February to late June (mid-semester break in mid-April)
Applicants must be second-semester sophomores by the beginning of the program and have a cumulative 2.5 GPA.
Estimated program expenses (Spring 2008): Tuition and program fee are approximately $6,700, room and board $4,712, airfare $1,850, personal expenses $2,500, books and supplies $375, public transportation $167, Australian visa and passport $458. Total expenses are approximately $16,888.
KU students who qualify for financial aid in the form of Stafford and/or other loans, Pell or SEOG Grants, and scholarships may apply the aid to the cost of a Study Abroad Program.
Limited supplemental scholarships are available to KU undergraduates. Applications are available at the Office of Study Abroad. You can also download the scholarship application. The scholarship application deadline is March 1 for Fall and October 1 for Spring.
